1902—Philadelphia A’s second baseman Danny Murphy was historically fashionably late.

Library of Congress

Murphy’s contract was just purchased from the minor-league Norwich Reds the previous day, and he did not arrive at Boston’s Huntington Avenue Grounds until the second frame of the ballgame—his debut with Philadelphia. Better late than never, Murphy went 6-for-6 in the contest (including a home run off Cy Young), having had no batting practice.

The 22-9 win over the Boston Americans featured a 12-run sixth inning by the A’s, and 45 total hits combined to set an American League record.
